chalkline

Parade 7'' is one of the best 90's emo newschool hardcore releases. Awesome band.

The midwest had numerous, great “emo-core” bands in the 90s. Back then, the bands represented exactly what that kind of label should entail, and that’s simply, emotional hardcore. Amidst the bigger emo-core bands of the 90s like Split Lip and Falling Forward, Chalkline was one of those bands and was a little underrated.

Chalkline put out their debut 7” on Toothless records called “Parade” in 1996, it contained 4 intense songs of emo meets screamo, later on they released a split 7” in the same style with Figurehead. At the end they released a 12” called: “in the present tense” which was way more melodic than their previous stuff.

guilt

The seedling of Guilt was planted in the autumn of 1991 when Christian McCoy, Kyle Noltemeyer, Lee Fetzer and Jon Smith began playing music under the name Step Down. One fall afternoon, i stayed around and watched the band practice. For the fun of it, the band began playing covers and i grabbed the microphone and joined them. The following weekend, Step Down played a birthday party for Ben Lord. They did not have a singer, so moments before their set they asked me if I was familiar enough with their songs to sing with them. The show turned out to be quite a bit of fun. I, without so much as a lyric written, preached about nonsense politics before every ssong. No one could tell that the band was winging it, how would they know, it went over quite well. So at the end of the evening, the band approached me and asked if i would assume the position of vocalist. I, who would never pass an opportunity to shoot off my mouth, gladly accepted the position. The band played feverishly for a year. Stepdown became and emotionally and politically fueled machine, challenging everyone in the scene, especially the Nazi faction which appeared to be growing in the region. Stepdown was fun for us all and we had a good time playing shows together. This remained true until the following Autumn. It was early September when I came into practice and announced that I wanted to leave the group. My depression was beginning to worsen and i could no longer justify playing in a group where I felt that I was talking about politics which the group as a whole did not fully support. I needed to start a band that focused upon depression, a way to express the ambiguity of the condition. I explained my concept thoroughly. Kyle, Christian, and Jon decided that they wanted to be a part of this change, so we began Guilt that day. I presented four songs that I had written over the summer while Endpoint was on tour. Those songs were : Scarlet, Teal, Rust, and another song which never made it out of the writing process. We agreed that we would release the final Stepdown songs under the name guilt with a new label from Orchard Grove called Initial Records. So before i left for Europe with Endpoint, we went into Mom’s studio and recorded the “Empty?” seven inch. Guilt began playing shows, and instantly attracted a very violent crows. For the first two years there was rarely a show where the band didn’t have to stop playing because of a violent altercation. By the following summer, guilt had already expired, Jon did not have the dedication, Kyle and I were beginning to argue about shows, and Christian was losing interest. Kyle and Christian were trying to continue the band without Jon and myself, but couldn’t seem to make things stick. Guilt was asked to play a show with Avail at Tewligans in Louisville. i went to the show and Kyle told me that their new guitarist and drummer did not bother to show. So I called Jon and we decided to play a set with them. The show went wonderfully. We then decided to record the songs at DSL studios the following week. If you listen closely one of the songs didn’t have an ending so we improvised. Everytime I listen to these songs I am still suprised that we sounded together. We hadn’t practiced in almost a year. Things went so well in fact that the group decided to play together again. Dennis and Andy paid for the recording and eventually put the ten inch out on Initial. Christian decided to pursure his new band, Ford, so we asked Ashli State f she would join the group. The dynamic created between Kyle who was a devote christian, Ashli who was an obstinate and wild woman, Jon who was allusive, and myself who was constantly floating between the highs and lows of depression was accurately represented in our music. Guilt never found a home. Crowds were not receptive to our style, for at the time people only wanted melodic emo or barchord mosh. In 1997 Guilt played a reunion/final show and released a final seven inch. - Duncan Barlow from the comprehensive CD.

shoulder

Shoulder was from London, Ontario from 1994 to 1997. Bryan Webb (guitar, vocals), Chris Irwin (bass) and Doug MacGregor (drums) started jamming together in the fall of 1994, highly influenced by bands such as Fugazi, Hoover and Jawbox. During late 1994, Bry joined As We Speak to replace their original guitarist that had left the band. Shoulder’s sound then changed to a more mid-western emo sound, influenced by such bands as Split Lip, Endpoint, Falling Forward and Shotmaker. In March 1995 they recorded their first demo at Studio 107 in London. These four songs were released on cassette tape. When rehearsing, the band often recorded various songs in their jam space (Bry’s basement) on a four-track recorder.

Not very long after the demo’s release, Paul Bright, from As We Speak (which had recently broken up) joined Shoulder as guitarist. The band played some more shows in their local area and the rest of Ontario. In October ’95, they recorded their first and only full-length, “Touch”, once again at Studio 107. The acoustic instrumentals between the songs were recorded by Chris Greenwood, and featured Vanessa Thatcher on violin. The LP/CD was released on Detroit’s best known label, Conquer the World Records, co-released by the band on Winter Records, a label operated by Paul Bright, in December of 1995. The band then started touring, entering the states, for a one week tour in the winter of ’95-’96, which took them in a loop around Lake Erie and back home. During these shows, the band would play covers of The Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary”, Rites of Spring’s “Hain’s Point” and “End on End” and a Dag Nasty song.

In 1996, they went back in studio for the third and final time and recorded five songs. The first two of these songs were released on the”Kindling” 7″ which was released by the same labels (Winter Records had by then changed name to Rhythm of Sickness). The third song was meant to be on a compilation for Rhythm of Sickness Records, which never happened. The fourth and fifth songs would be used on the Goodfellow Records compilation “The Difference Between Us”, and on the split with Morning Again on Moo Cow Records, both in 1997. At this time the band embarked on a two week tour with Holocron and played all the way down to Florida, and did a Quebec tour on their way back. It was during this time that the band played with the greatest hardcore band ever (my opinion), Morning Again. They discussed doing a split, and upon return hooked up with Moo Cow Records to release the split on 7″. To this day it’s still one of the hardest to find, because people simply wont part with it.

Other than the Rhythm of Sickness compilation, the band had quite a few plans that fell through… Struggle Records was due to put out one of the most anticipated compilations entitled “Benefit for the Buffalo Animal Defense League”. Mike Warden of Conquer the World also talked about re-issuing the Kindling 7″ on CD compiling it with the rest of the songs from the session, and possibly other songs that were never recorded. They were also due to release a split with Chokehold on Rhythm of Sickness, but it ended up being with Left For Dead in the end.

Through out 1997 they continued to write material and play festivals, and were talking about recording another full-length, including the newly written songs “EastEnd” and “Owned and Operated”. They never got to record any of the new material in studio however, and played their final show on October 10th 1997 at Call the Office in their home town (it was their 65th show) with Holocron (the band they played with the most), Acceptance and Slipshod.

In 1999 one of their home basement recordings from 1994, “The Woods”, was included as a hidden bonus track on “The Emo Diaries Chapter 3: The Moment of Truth” released by Deep Elm (and I’m not sure how this song was included). During this year most of the final line-up (Bryan, Paul, Doug and newly recruited bassist Dallas Wehrle) started jamming again under the name Constantines, but Paul Bright was soon asked to leave to be replaced by Steve Lambke and the band would rise to fame. The only surfacing of Shoulder since has been the inclusion of “Second Hand” taken from their full-length on the digital compilation put out by CTW “15 Years”, to represent the ending of the label in 2006.

god forgot

Side project of Dan O’Mahoney & Kevin Murphy during their run together playing in 411.

Less melodic than 411 and drawing on more of a post-hardcore sound. They only released a 2-song 7inch on Allied Records. Don’t Touch plays almost as if it could have been an unreleased 411 song that just didn’t fit in to their sound. Sex Is A Weapon is a much more groove oriented song showing the changing times as bands like Quicksand took rise over the Hardcore/Indie scene at the time.

strongarm

Strongarm came from South Florida. The band was the result of several local bands who had similar tastes in music and who were all Christians. Jason Berggren started Ikthus which included Chris Carbonell and Chad Neptune. Eventually Josh Colbert and Nick Dominguez joined forces with them when their band Endure broke up, which then became Strongarm (Endure had a song called “Together” which was covered by Strongarm and put as a hidden track on the Advent Of A Miracle CD). This was the original line up:

Nick Dominguez - Guitar
Joshua Colbert - Guitar
Chris Carbonell - Drums
Chad Neptune - Bass
Jason Berggren - Vocals

Strongarm started in 1993 and under this line-up recorded two demos: first there was a 3 track nameless demo recorded at this guy Tony Bartoli’s house. It featured “Forgiven”, “Stand Together” (both re-recorded for Atonement) and the otherwise unreleased song “Unfold”. Shortly thereafter they recorded their second demo in a local studio with better production: a 4 track demo called “These Times That Try Men’s Souls” (featuring the songs “Count The Cost”, “Trials”, “Remaining” and “Strenghtened In Faith”. While recording this demo, Tooth & Nail Records contacted Strongarm expressing interest in them (how they heard of them is still a mystery today). Strongarm sent over their whole demo, and Strongarm’s song “Count the Cost” appeared on Tooth & Nail’s first compilation album entitled “Helpless Amongst Friends” (P.O.D. also appears on that). This demo, and Strongarm’s performance at Cornerstone Festival that year, caught the attention of Tooth & Nail Records president Brandon Ebel who signed them. The original line-up remained the same for the release of their debut album “Atonement” in early 1995. Shortly after the release of this album there were personal differences in the band, and Nick (who went on to form Tension) and Chris were asked to leave the band by Jason. They were replaced by Bob Franquiz on guitar (formerly of the South Florida band Amboogalard which also included a member who went on to join Marilyn Manson) and Steve Kleisath on drums (formerly of the Tampa band Pull). He also played in a band called Shai Hulud at the time; a band that had pretty much a similar sound. One of the reasons for this fact might have been that Joshua had played with Shai Hulud’s guitar player Matt Fox around 1991 in a band called Planet X. They discovered that hardcore didn’t necessarily have to mean powerchords… they experimented with other kind of chord arrangements and melody that led to the sound that distinguished both Strongarm and Shai Hulud from the hardcore scene at the time.
You can look at a copy in cache of how their artist page at Tooth & Nail looked like at that time by clicking here.

Bob Franquiz - Guitar
Joshua Colbert - Guitar
Steve Kleisath - Drums
Chad Neptune - Bass
Jason Berggren - Vocals

Under this line-up Strongarm composed 5 of the 9 songs that appear on their 2nd album (“Advent of a Miracle”, “These Times That Try Men’s Souls”, “Increase”, “Supplication”, and “Measure of Consequence”).They also did a video for Tooth & Nail, a rare 7-inch record entitled “Trials” which includes an early version of the song ‘Increase’ (with an awesome sample of Darth Vader), and a summer tour. Eventually personal differences came to a head again, and Jason and Bob decided to leave Strongarm to pursue other interests. Although only 5 songs had been written for their next album, the remaining members decided to regroup and press on. Nick rejoined the band on guitar and they were looking for a while for a good singer; but finally they decided that drummer Chris would rejoin as well, and do the vocals. Strongarm continued on and finished work on their album “The Advent Of A Miracle” which was released in 1997. The line-up for this album was:

Nick Dominguez - Guitar
Joshua Colbert - Guitar
Steve Kleisath - Drums
Chad Neptune - Bass
Chris Carbonell - Vocals

They did several tours and finally announced their break-up in 1998 at their final show at Cornerstone Festival. This is what Steve Kleisath said about it in an interview:

As far as the reason Strongarm broke up people always wonder. It wasn’t any one thing; the commitment level needed wasn’t there anymore. Two of the guys were married, Chris and Josh, and they weren’t available to tour. And just to write a whole new album for us takes a long time. We had a few ideas, actually had a few new songs, which will probably never be released. The time that it would take to do it and then know we wouldn’t be able to tour off it just wasn’t worth it. We were supposed to go to Europe, and that fell through, which really took the wind out of our sails, we had planned it the summer before, and we were planning our whole lives around being gone for a month and that fell through at the last minute, like on our way to the airport. The promoter who set us up and also set us up with Zao and Living Sacrifice who were gonna meet us out there, he never sold the tickets, and that really let the wind out of our sails. That wasn’t why we broke up, but at that point we sorta got the feeling “alright we’ve been around a while, I think we are in the twilight of the band.”

But after a while Nick, Steve, Josh and Chad apparently couldn’t live without being in a band so they decided to form a new band called Further Seems Forever.Click here to see how they announced it on the Strongarm homepage at the time. They found a vocalist called Chris Carraba to fill up Chris Carbonell’s place. The musical direction had switched from hardcore to emo, and also the missionary aspect that Strongarm clearly had was no longer there.

In 2000, Strongarm made a reunion appearance at Furnace Fest. It was the same line-up as it was when they broke up. On the song “Trials”, they had their buddy Matt Fox on drums.

surface

During the mid-winter of 1994, in the affluent suburbs of Los Angeles, came the powerful tunes of Surface. Within just three months of birth these four kids caused an earthquake throughout the punk scene of Southern California. It was at this point that the band began to realize that they could progress from tiny house shows to being an influential part of hardcore. They also began to remove themselves from their basic hardcore sound to a more innovative, emotional hardcore style. This was also when they felt that they were ready to record their first seven-inch, which was failed to be released by Watermark Records. Despite the many frustrations caused by this botched record deal, the band piled in their van for a four week tour of the United States. Upon their return home they found themselves at a loss for musical inspiration, but continued to play a number of local shows during the remaining months of 1995. It was almost exactly one year from their beginnings that a fifth, and long-awaited, individual joined the band. They now had the boost of energy that they needed and were back on track. Shows came and went, and the scene gave them more enthusiasm than ever. It now seemed like the perfect opportunity to re-enter the recording studio, this time successfully recording seven songs for the “Seven Times Over Fold” LP, two for the “Posthumous” seven-inch, and a few extra tracks for various compilations. “Seven Times Over Fold” was released by …and then there were none.records (now Satellite Transmissions) in April of 1996, while “Posthumous” hit the scene a few months later on Catchphraze Records. Surface has exceeded the expectations of its members and continues to dazzle listeners across the globe with their emotional lyrics, serious issues, and, most of all, excellent music.”

I’m not sure who wrote that, but it definitely comes off like a label promotional blurb. This “discography” cd came out on Status Recordings (anyone else remember that zine/label?), and it combines the Seven Times Over Fold lp, the Posthumous 7”, and one comp track. However, I’ve heard from various people that there are more recorded (unreleased) songs that aren’t present on this cd.

unbroken

My little present for you on this holidays)))

Unbroken was a hardcore band from San Diego, California. They were influential in the Southern California hardcore scene during the mid-to-late 1990s. The band chose the name Unbroken because they wanted to emphasize their dedication to the straight edge philosophy of drug abstinence. However, most of the members have since given up this belief.

The band’s members were also in the groups Struggle, Swing Kids , Kill Holiday, Julia, Some Girls, Smooth Man Automatic, Johnny Angel, Stabbed By Words, and Over My Dead Body before, during, and after Unbroken’s existence.

Guitarist Eric Allen committed suicide 3 years after the break up of the band. The band reformed soon after Eric’s death for 1 show as a benefit to Eric’s family.

Rob Moran until recently played in the hardcore group Some Girls and now resides in Seattle. He has more recently started a band with John Pettibone (former member of Undertow and Nineironspitfire, currently in Himsa), Ryan Murphy (former member of Undertow, Ten Yard Fight, Ensign) and Aram Arslanian (guitarist of Champion and vocalist for Betrayed). The band, The Vows, is a straight-edge band that is musically influenced by the old-school hardcore band Judge. The Vows released a CD on Indecision Records in 2006.

Rob Moran is in a new band called Narrows with Dave Verellen of Botch and Ryan Frederiksen of These Arms Are Snakes. They have an ep and album coming out on Deathwish Inc.

Dave Claibourne sings for the band Stabbed By Words (who have a full length out on Hawthorne Street Records), and is a drum & bass dj with Dedication Crew in St. Louis, MO.

Steve Andrew Miller moved away from San Diego and he resides in Orange County. He has a band called Crushed On You. Former Bleeding Through guitarist and long-time O.C. scenester Scott Danough joined the band a couple of months ago.
